My Teaching Philosophy
Teaching is both an art and a science, and I am committed to fostering an educational environment where students are not only informed but inspired. My teaching philosophy is grounded in the belief that education should be experiential, inclusive, and adaptive to the needs of each student. With over 20 years of experience in education, I have developed a nuanced understanding of how to engage students and facilitate their learning in meaningful ways.
I am a strong advocate for experiential learning, believing that students learn best when they can apply theoretical concepts to real-world scenarios. In my courses, I incorporate a variety of hands-on activities, case studies, and simulation exercises to help students bridge the gap between theory and practice. For instance, in my Organizational Behavior course, I have utilized team-based projects where students work on solving actual business problems. This not only enhances their problem-solving skills but also fosters collaboration and critical thinking. My commitment to experiential learning is further demonstrated by my active membership in The Association for Business Simulation and Experiential Learning (ABSEL), where I continuously seek new methods and strategies to improve my teaching practices.
Creating an inclusive classroom environment is paramount to me. I strive to ensure that all students feel valued and respected, regardless of their background or experience level. I achieve this by encouraging open dialogue, respecting diverse perspectives, and adapting my teaching methods to accommodate different learning styles. For example, I use a mix of lectures, group discussions, multimedia resources, and interactive activities to cater to visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learners. Additionally, I am mindful of creating a supportive atmosphere where students are comfortable sharing their ideas and questions.
The dynamic nature of today’s educational landscape, especially with the integration of AI and other technologies, necessitates an adaptive teaching approach. I continually update my course content and teaching strategies to reflect the latest developments in the field. For instance, I integrate discussions on the impact of AI on organizational behavior and job security, helping students understand and navigate the complexities of the modern workplace. I also utilize various teaching technologies to enhance learning, such as online discussion boards and virtual office hours.
My international teaching experience has enriched my ability to create a diverse and inclusive classroom environment. I have worked in educational settings where students came from more than 30 countries. This experience has taught me the importance of cultural sensitivity and adaptability in teaching, and it has equipped me with the skills to address the unique needs of a globally diverse student body. Additionally, being trilingual has greatly enhanced my ability to connect with students from different linguistic backgrounds, fostering a more inclusive and effective learning environment.
Engaging students and supporting their academic and professional growth are central to my teaching practice. I maintain an open-door policy, encouraging students to seek help and guidance whenever needed. I provide timely and constructive feedback on assignments and actively mentor students in their career aspirations. For example, I have guided students in their research projects, helping them develop strong research skills and a deeper understanding of the subject matter.
My passion for teaching is deeply rooted in my personal history. I began teaching my classmates when I was in primary school, driven by a love for sharing knowledge and helping others understand complex concepts. Teaching has never been a demand for me but rather a source of impact, meaningfulness, and inspiration. This passion is reflected in my commitment to continuous improvement and professional development. I regularly attend workshops, conferences, and training sessions to enhance my teaching skills and stay current with educational trends. I am also actively involved in academic communities, such as the Academy of Management and the Eastern Academy of Management, where I engage with fellow educators and contribute to the advancement of management education.
